Online Counselling

How does it work? What can you expect? Your questions are answered here.

  • Online counselling is any form of counselling that’s delivered online. This can be via live chat, video call, or audio-only call.

I offer online counselling via video call. All sessions are conducted via Zoom.

  • All sessions are conducted via Zoom. You’ll receive an email with the link to our video call and an appointment reminder. At the time of our session, you can click that link to join the call.

You can join via laptop, computer, tablet, or smartphone.

  • There are lots of benefits to online counselling, mostly because it’s much more accessible than in-person counselling.

    • You can attend the session from the comfort of your own home. Why sit in an uncomfortable chair when you can sit on your own couch or bed with your favourite blanket and a cup of tea?

    • You don’t have to spend time travelling to and from an office. Life is busy, and not having to drive to and from an appointment leaves you with more time to spend on what’s important to you.

    • You don’t have to spend money on public transport, petrol, or parking.

    • You don’t have to take as much time off work, watching the children, study, or other responsibilities. Fit the session into your work lunch break, your child’s nap time, or your downtime at uni. Do you have to change your child’s nappy or quickly answer the door for the postie? No problem at all.

    • You can attend from anywhere in Australia. This makes counselling more accessible if you don’t have a counsellor who is a good fit for you in your geographical area.

  • Since the COVID-19 pandemic, online counselling has become much more common. There has been a lot of recent research that studied whether online counselling is as effective as in-person counselling.

Multiple studies have found that online counselling can be just as effective as in-person counselling. For some people, online counselling is even more effective than in-person counselling. For example, people who deal with anxiety and find it difficult to leave the house might find counselling more effective when there’s no added stress or anxiety because they have to leave the house, take public transport, and attend an appointment at an unfamiliar location.

  • Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of counselling. Like in-person counselling, online counselling is fully confidential.

What does this mean? Everything you tell me stays between us and won’t be shared with anyone.

There are a few exceptions to confidentiality, and that is if I believe that you or someone else may be at risk of being harmed.

I conduct my sessions in a private, soundproof home office. I ask that you attend our sessions in a private space so that our conversation can stay confidential and you don’t have to worry about filtering your words because someone else can hear what you’re saying.

  • To attend an online session, you need a device with a working microphone and camera. This can be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

You also need a reliable internet connection. Of course small interruptions can happen, but I want you to get the most out of your session without having to worry about technical issues and internet connection.

How do I prepare for an online session?

Find a comfortable and private spot.

Counselling sessions are private and confidential. I ask that you don’t attend your sessions in a public space, but find a quiet and private place where you can be present and don’t have to worry about what others will hear.

This can be your bedroom, a car (that you’re not driving) or a meeting/study room where you’re alone.

Use a device with a stable internet connection.

A smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer all work well.

Make sure your device is charged enough for 60 minutes or that you have access to a charger.

Bring anything that makes you comfortable

A blanket, your favourite pillow, a fidget toy, a stuffed animal. Anything that makes you more comfortable during our session is welcome.

Grab a drink and/or a snack

Make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, bring your water bottle, and grab a snack if you need it.
